Michigan-Michigan State is a one-score game late in the 4th

Michigan football hosts Michigan State for 2024 rivalry game

FOURTH QUARTER

The Spartans mixed the run and pass to move the ball, keeping the Wolverines on their heels. Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams had a strong run up the middle to the Michigan 18. Chiles was dropped for a sack on the next snap. It led to a third and 12 with the clock ticking. Chiles whipped a sidearm pass to a streaking Nick Marsh, who reversed field as soon as he caught it, taking it from the 13 to the end zone. It’s a one-score game here in the fourth.

Before the fourth quarter begins, the referee announces a targeting penalty from the previous play. Michigan State starting linebacker Jordan Turner was ejected. It puts the ball at the MSU 42. Michigan shuffles between Warren and Orji at quarterback. With Warren in on third and 3, Kendrick Bell catches a pass for a first down at the MSU 23. On the next snap, Edwards takes a pitch, takes a couple of steps, then throws to a wide-open Colston Loveland for a touchdown. Michigan digging deep into its bag of tricks tonight. Michigan goes for two and gets it on a pass from Warren to Loveland. An octopus for Loveland.

THIRD QUARTER

Alex Orji keeps the ball on Michigan’s first snap of the drive, the final play of the third quarter.

2:04 — Michigan State goes three and out, hurt by a false start penalty to start the drive. Big stop for the Michigan defense.

3:43 — Michigan State tries an onside kick; a Wolverine tried to get it before 10 yards, and it bounced around before Michigan’s Tavierre Dunlap fell on it. MSU, it turns out, was offsides anyway. Michigan can’t take advantage of the good field position, with Loveland dropping a potential first down — an official blocked his view just as the ball was coming. That’s a tough break. Michigan punts.

9:49 — Michigan State has a miscue on the kickoff, with one player calling for a fair catch and a different Spartan actually catching the ball. It led to MSU starting on its own 5. After one first down, MSU faced a third and 4. Chiles lofted a ball down the field into single coverage, and Montorie Foster made the catch for a 30-yard gain. On third and 1, Kenneth Grant consumed MSU running back Nate Carter for a loss. It set up a 46-yard field goal from Jonathan Kim, and he nailed it.

15:00 – Michigan got the ball to start the second half. Facing a third and 8 right away, Davis Warren found Semaj Morgan for a first down. Alex Orji took the next snap and ran for the first time tonight. He had a lot of room along the Spartan sideline and picked up 29 yards to the Michigan State 35. On the next snap, Mullings got the handoff and flipped it back to Davis, who found Tyler Morris with a beautiful pass — over one defender and in front of another for a 23-yard gain. Michigan continued the trickery: Morgan took a direct snap, faked a reverse to Orji, and kept the ball for a seven-yard gain to the Michigan State 5. Michigan made it first and goal from the MSU 1: Mullings lost a yard; Warren threw it out of the end zone; Orji entered, took a shotgun snap as MSU was substituting, and ran into the end zone untouched. This time, the extra point is converted.
